e-BizResources Update
October 21, 2005
=========================
Hi,

Michael here. Welcome to the latest issue of "e-BizResources
Update". I hope you're well.

I've got a confession to make. You haven't heard from me for a
while because I haven't managed to do much work in the last few
weeks. But I do have valid reasons. Honest! ;-)

Without boring you with all the details, I'll just say that
computers aren't always fun and kidney stones are NEVER fun,
let alone a possible mild case of pancreatitis. 5 nights in
hospital, and over a week resting at home and I've found it a
little difficult to get back into things properly.

No, I'm not after sympathy (well, maybe a little - joking), I'm
just explaining why you haven't heard from me for a few weeks.
And to show that I wasn't just slacking off ;0)

[Sidenote to the subscriber who emailed me asking about
classified advertising and conversion ratios: unfortunately,
while dealing with the PC problem, I managed to lose about a
month's worth of emails, including yours. At this stage, I
can't remember your name. I haven't forgotten you, but I do
need you to resend the initial email please.]

Anyway, my problems are insignificant when compared with what
many people have faced recently, and continue to face. Let's
spare a thought and a prayer for those affected by natural
disasters in many parts of the world.

This week's issue of the newsletter is probably a little light
on, but given my cicumstances, I hope you'll understand.

So, what's in store for you today? Lets see ...

1. Free Resource #1: ViralFX
My good friend Keith Wellman gave me permission to give you
this special link. It will allow you access to some extremely
advanced viral marketing training and tools.
Check it out here:

2. A Reader's Question: How to Raise Money Quickly.

Just before my enforced "holiday", a reader emailed me a
question that I thought others may be interested in.

This particular reader was in a bit of a jam and needed to raise
some money fairly quickly. Oddly, they emailed me for some
advice.

My answer may be of interest to other readers, so here it is,
I've added a couple of links to products that are relevant:

------------

I'm not an expert or "guru" and nowhere near as "experienced and
successful" as many others, I'm still learning too so I compile
my newsletter mainly from the writings of those who are
experienced and successful. But I'll try to give a few
suggestions.

First off though, do you have your own website/domain, what is
your target market at the moment and do you own the rights to
any products relevant to that market?

(Note: when I say "own the rights", I mean either products that
you've created or ones for which you've bought "resale rights".)

Affiliate programs are a great way to start an online business,
but they have one major drawback when you need to raise funds
quickly - almost all of them pay the commissions the month after
you make the sale. On the other hand, when you own the rights to
a product you get paid immediately you make a sale.

Now I do have a few suggestions that could help you raise some
money fairly quickly, but they all hinge around you owning the
rights to one or more products, and I can't make any promises
about how much you'll be able to raise in the time you have
available.

So, here goes:

(a) The quickest and easiest one to implement would probably be
selling the product/s on eBay, but they do charge for listings.
You don't need your own website or to host a sales page and you
could handle the delivery of digital products by normal email,
if necessary.

A secondary idea for eBay may be "drop-shipping", which is
similar in some respects to affiliate programs because you sell
other peoples' products. It's an area that I'm not very familiar
with yet, but I understand that you take the orders and payments,
then onforward the info and "wholesale" payment to the drop-
shipper, who then fulfils the order. So, you get your share
immediately here too.

If this is interesting, download & read this free report:

http://www.e-bizresources.com/download/ebayprofits.zip

It'll give you a great starting point, and if you want more
detailed info about eBay profits, you can check these out:

http://www.e-bizresources.com/ebaybusiness

Auction Genius Course
http://www.e-bizresources.com/auctiongenius

Auction Resource Network
http://www.e-bizresources.com/auctionresnetwork

The next few ideas also assume that you have your own web site
and/or domain.

(b) The next suggestion is to arrange some Joint Ventures with
a few (even lots of) people who do have subscriber lists in your
target market, to sell your product/s. Depending on the product/s
you're offering, the price and the Joint Venture partners you
can attract it's possible to make quite a bit of money quite
quickly through joint ventures.

You can read a couple of articles about Joint Ventures in past
issues of the ezine at:

http://www.e-bizresources.com/update/15apr05.html

http://www.e-bizresources.com/update/2005mar25.html

I'd suggest that you set it up with a two-stage payment so your
Joint Venture partners get paid their share first (say 50 - 75%),
and then you get paid your share. It's not hard to do manually,
but takes a bit of time and effort.

[I've recently come across a great new tool that can automate
a big slice of setting up this type of two-stage payment
process. You can get it at a special intro price here:
http://www.e-bizresources.com/isc/special.html]

If you set it up manually, remember to encrypt either the
payment buttons (e.g. Paylock Pro if you're using PayPal) or the
whole page so thieves can't find the download page by just viewing
the source code. (This applies to any sales page.)

[N.B. , Paylock Pro is available at a good price here:
http://www.e-bizresources.com/paylockgen
and If you want to learn more about Joint Ventures, I've put
together a value-packed bundle of resources and tools, which
I've called the "Joint Venture Success Pack" here:
http://www.e-bizresources.com/jvsuccess]

(c) Another idea is to set up a free online service relevant to
your target market, where people need to sign up or register to
gain access. This could be a vey targetted niche-specific forum,
an online club or any free service that would be very helpful to
your target market.

You'd have the sign up process set up to include a special offer
of your relevant product/s at a deep discount off the normal price.
Remember the "one time offer" that you should have seen after you
confirmed for my list? (The current one's proving to be less
popular than I'd hoped. Maybe due to price?)

It doesn't have to be fancy, just say something like:

"Thank you for joining my free 'xyz service'. There's a link to
the members area near the bottom of this page, but don't go
there before you've had a chance to check out this offer. I'd
like to offer you the opportunity to buy 'abc product' at a
very special price. 'abc product' does ......
Check out the full details and the normal price here (URL in
new window), but don't buy there. Come back here and save $xx.
(Elaborate a little if you can.)" Insert you discount payment
link or button.
Then have a link towards the bottom of the page where people
can click to go straight to the members area.

You'd then promote it any way you can, such as Joint Ventures
and forums (but no blatant adverts on forums).

(d) Another variation could be to do a straight "list-building"
Joint Venture with some relevant list owners, with a special
offer to your new members on their confirmation.

If I think of any other ideas, I'll let you know.

A quick note: If your target market is other marketers, you
should probably have a quick rethink - it's ULTRA competitive.
It would probably be better to attack a different niche. Rather
than repeating it, my newsletter from 5 Feb '05 gives a bit of
info about niche marketing and has some free tools that might
be helpful. You can read it here:

http://www.e-bizresources.com/update/2005feb5.html

I hope this is helpful to you.

3. Free Resource #2: Niche Profits Course

I've recommended Niche Marketing to you a number of times.
Now a friend, named Joe Cooper, has just released a great new
course that takes you step by step through his proven methods
of making profits in niche markets.

He may be selling it in future for up to $97, but you can have
it for free for the time being. Check it out here:

4. Guest Article:

"What the Gurus Didn't Tell You About Google Adwords"
by Brendan McCaffery

Now if you have been marketing online for awhile you have
probably heard of Google Adwords. Basically, for those that
don't know, you pay a certain amount for each time someone
clicks on your ad ("PPC" or "Pay Per Click"). This has been
a proven way to market as it is VERY targeted! This usually
leads to great conversion rates. Well when the gurus tell you
to advertise on Google or any other PPC, they don't tell you
the whole story.

What they haven't told you is that your ad can be taken off
Google if your CTR (click-thru rate) isn't high enough. That
means a certain percentage of people that see your ad need to
click on it to keep your CTR high enough. Well you can make
sure that your ad doesn't get taken off.

You need to "target" your keywords. You can do this by
putting brackets [] around keywords that are two words or less
and putting quotes " " around keyword phrases that are more than
2 words. So if your keyword is golf clubs then it must be put
into brackets like this: [golf clubs]. If you don't target your
keywords then your ad could show up for people searching for
"how to quit golf." Those people will definitely not click on
your ad.

Just to let you know, this is FREE information given by Google
if you call them up for help. I've seen people sell this
information for $50 which I think is very unfair since they got
it for free.

So just follow these steps to success on Google.

1.) Choose the keywords that you want to target using the tip
I gave you. Make sure people are actually searching for your
keyword and make sure it isn't super-competitive.

2.) Write an ad. Look at some of the ads on Google and learn
from the ones that made you want to click on their link. What
did they do that made you want to click?

3.) Bid on the keyword. You do NOT have to be number one, but
you do want to be on the first page. Again if your keyword is
too competitive, it is likely going to cost you around $5 per
click which is VERY risky. Paying thay much for a keyword, you
better hope to GOD your ad copy is one of the best of the world.

4.) If you profit, keep the ad running. If it fails, try to
find out what you did wrong. Is the ad copy not good? Is the
market too competitive?

5.) Once you start to profit on Google, start advertising on
other PPCs.

Repeat the process.

Now can you see how you have been lied to this whole time? These
gurus make it seem like you will automatically start making
money once you place an ad on Google. This will just make you
LOSE money!

If Brendan's giving out this article with GREAT information imagine
what kind of tips I'm giving to my precious subscribers!
If you thought this report was good wait until you see the
second. Go here:

and fill it out. I'll give you a special gift. You just need
to take these baby steps then you are on the road to success...
and you haven't even paid a dime!

I, Brendan McCaffery of products4cheap.com, officially authorize
everyone and anyone to use my article as many times as you would
like to use it and to send to any number of people that they
want to. The only condition is that the article stays in it's
original form and my coordinates stay as an integral part of the
article.

-------------------------------------------

5. Another Reader's Question: Google's Link Policy.

The timing of Brendan sending me the above article couldn't have
been better. Let me explain ...

You see, it's loosely related to an email I'd just received
from a subscriber, asking me to explain something they'd
heard about Google.

They'd heard that Google had changed it's affiliate link policy.
They knew it was a pretty important change but weren't sure what
it really meant and asked for a "newbie-friendly" explanation.

I'll try to meet that need without getting too long-winded.
Some readers may already be familiar with some of this, if so
please either skip foward slightly or bear with me for the sake
of those who are newer.

Well, the policy change relates to people who advertise using
Google Adwords, which is a PPC or "Pay Per Click" type of
advertising.

THE BASICS
----------

You've probably seen these ads. Whenever you do a search on
Google, almost every page of search results has a series of
small ads to the right of the search results. You've probably
also seen other web pages that have small text ads on them with
a tag line saying "Ads by Google" or even "Ads by Goooooogle".
Both these are examples of Google Adword ads.

Basically, (almost) anyone who wants to advertise a web site
(either their own, or one they're an affiliate for) can sign
up for a Google Adwords account. You then nominate how much
you're willing to pay per click (your bid), for what keywords
or search terms, write an ad and you're away - that's the
simplified version.

It has been a pretty cheap and effective way to quickly gain
some traffic and sales, including for affiliates.

As Brendan explained in his informative article, as an
advertiser, "you pay a certain amount [your bid] for each time
someone clicks on your ad". The page that person ends up seeing
is called the "Target URL".

Until recently, that "Target URL" could be simply an affiliate
link. Which meant that there were often cases where two or more
Google ads in any group effectively ended up at the same URL
(let's call it; "parent" page).

For example, let's look at a website called "www.widgets.com" who
sell widgets (surprise, surprise) and run a Google Adwords campaign.

They also run an affiliate program and two of the affiliates also
advertise using Google Adwords and their standard affiliate link
(e.g. www.widgets.com/?affid=12345), which also ultimately ends
up at the "parent" page.

Depending on who bids what, on what keywords and how much other
competition there is, all three ads could show up on results
pages for certain keywords. Google has decided that's repetition
that detracts from the users' search experience.

THE CHANGE
----------

Now, Google isn't allowing more than one ad in each block of ads
to point to any one URL, presumably the highest bidder. So, it's
very unlikely that affiliate ads will make it.

But they haven't stopped there, they're also counting the
following as duplicates:

* Target URLs that automatically redirect the user to the
"parent" page, and

* even simple landing pages whose sole purpose is to advertise
or presell the product and get the user to click a link to go
to that "parent" page.

So, affiliates who want to advertise with Google Adwords will
effectively have to have their own webpage that offers the user
something that's at least a little different from the "parent"
page and from the pages of the company's other affiliates.

You can achieve this by using an article or a product review,
product comparisons, one page that advertises two or more
products that are at least loosely related to each other.

These are just a few examples. Use your imagination to come up
with something a bit different and Google Adwords will still be
an effective advertising tool for your affiliate programs.

Well, Floyd, I hope this has answered your question and maybe
helped a few other readers as well.
